The non-commercial agency for Austrian avant-garde and experimental films has been offering an extensive tour program of films by Mara Mattuschka since mid-December. The five feature-length programs also include two programs of short films.
One program is dedicated to early short films. In the 1980s, Mattuschka made numerous solo works, for which she created the art figure Mimi Minus as a protagonist. The program begins with the black-and-white 16mm film “Kugelkopf” (1985), in which Mimi Minus shears her hair and writes on the screen with her head as if using a ballpoint typewriter. Also in the program: “S.O.S. Extraterrestria” (1993) – a parody of mainstream disaster films in which Mimi Minus, as a kind of female King Kong gozilla, wreaks havoc on the world with full physical (performance) commitment.
The second short film program consists of films made in cooperation with Chris Haring and his performance collective Liquid Loft between 2005 and 2009. Among them is the video “Running Sushi,” starring dancer Stephanie Cumming, in which a restaurant plays out a relationship drama from a fisheye perspective.
The three other programs in the series are “Perfect Garden,” a longer 2013 work with Chris Haring, the feature-length film “Phaidros” (2018) and, rounding out the series, the documentary portrait of the artist “Different Faces of an Anti-Diva” by Elisabeth Klocker.
Mara Mattuschka has been one of Austria’s most important experimental filmmakers for more than 35 years. In addition to her film work, the Bulgarian-born artist (*1959, Sofia) is also active as an actress, painter, professor, performance artist and film producer.
The five programs can be rented as DCP at Sixpack for a minimum guarantee of €1,000.
