“Film history for everyone”: VoD platform LaCinetek now also available in Germany

News

The LaCinetek video-on-demand platform has been established in France since 2015. The non-profit organization specializes in film history classics that are not offered on other streaming platforms, including numerous short films. Since February LaCinetek has also been launched in Germany and Austria.

LaCinetek works with a curatorial model: internationally renowned contemporary filmmakers are invited to propose their favourite films of the last century. The platform then acquires the rights.

LaCinetek was founded by members of the l’Association La Cinémathèque des Réalisateurs in cooperation with the VoD platform UniversCiné. In Germany, LaCinetek is represented by EYZ Media GmbH in Berlin, which previously also entered into a cooperation directly with UniversCiné (see also our article “VoD platform UniversCiné now also in Germany”).

Through its international expansion, LaCinetek hopes to facilitate the acquisition of licenses and expand the range of titles, as co-founder Cédric Klapisch announced at a press conference during the Berlinale. In Germany, the Deutsche Kinemathek is the platform’s official institutional partner.

In France, LaCinetek offers around 1,500 titles. These include films by Eisenstein and Chaplin, but also films by the Nouvelle Vague, such as Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut. The German platform started with about 250 films, including recommendations by Maren Ade and Christian Petzold. The project is also supported by Christoph Hochhäusler and Wim Wenders, who said at the start, “This is a dream come true. Now there is film history for everyone!”

The films in the catalogue are available in France as subscriptions (SVOD) and as pay-per-view. The German platform offers individual films (TVOD) starting from 2,99 € for streaming and starting from 7,99 € for dowload. There are currently about twenty short films by Charlie Chaplin, Louis Feuillade, Chris Marker, Alain Resnais, Eric Rohmer and Jean Vigo available in the German licence area. The more comprehensive wish list also includes films by younger authors such as Bruce Baillie, Abbas Kirostami and John Smith.
