In January 2018 the Holland Animation Filmfestival Utrecht (HAFF) announced that the board of the HAFF Foundation had decided to fundamentally reform the festival and that the previous director, Gerben Schermer, had resigned. Schermer had led HAFF for 30 years and had recently fallen out with the board because of differences in festival politics. The festival that was announced for March 2018 was therefore cancelled.

In October HAFF announced a joint venture with the KLIK Amsterdam Animation Festival. In the eleven years of its existence, KLIK Foundation (Amsterdam) had specialised in thematically oriented festivals and the promotion of the Dutch animation film industry.

Over the next two years, the new partners agreed to organise one festival each in Utrecht and Amsterdam and to develop a new concept in the coming months.

On 2 April, the partners opened a Call for Entries under the working title KLIKxHAFF. The closing date for applications is 1 June (1 July for students). The first joint festival will take place in November 2019 and the next in March 2020.

The announcement stated (contrary to the regulations!) that only films completed after 1 January 2019 could be submitted. Films submitted for HAFF 2018 will therefore not be considered. Films submitted for the Festival 2019 can also be selected for the second festival in 2020. Among others, there will be competitions in the categories Animated Short and Animated Student Short (up to 24 min.), Animated Documentary, Animated Music Video, Animated VR and Animated Features (over 60 min.). Installations and games can also be submitted.
