SHORTMOVES is an annual international festival that also aims to present a platform for the support of short films especially in the state of Sachsen-Anhalt. With the SHORTMOVES project we would like to emphasise the significance of the genre of the short film for the qualification of young people in a medium which has gained influence on the perception of social reality in the 21st century. Although the short film festival is internationally oriented, it also aims to encourage talented young film makers in Halle and in the state of Sachsen-Anhalt to take a critical look at reality and at subjects referring to society through the eye of the camera. At the same time we would like to draw the publics' attention to the creative potential of the film-makers of tomorrow, establish structures and advance the co-operation among film-makers.

Born out of a good deal of exhibitionism and voyeurism in 1999: the idea of a festival for short movies. A fusty archive of cinematic course work and the frustration about the nearly forgotten works mobilized the media-science students in Jena. The Filmfest Jena e.V. was founded and since then has fully committed itself to the short movie. The organization wants to promote short movie culture by establishing a long-run festival for such experimental projects.

The International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, one of the oldest and most renowned film festivals in the world, has always been flexible in dealing with political and aesthetic change, choosing its own standard of quality against which the "short idea on celluloid" is to be measured. A work must always be judged against its own claim of being something new - regardless of genre, production quality and budget. The decisive factor is a film's position vis-?-vis social reality, cultural differences and aesthetic innovation. The four competitions, featuring some 140 new films and videos from all around the world attract television programme editors as well as curators, festival representatives and journalists: German and International Competition, Children's and Youth Film Competition and MuVi Award for best German Music Video. Extensive thematic special programmes and retrospectives of individual short filmmakers. Film market, non-commercial distribution and archive.
