shortfilm.de is the joint short film portal of the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen and AG Kurzfilm, the German Short Film Association.
Prompted by the impression that just a handful of short films scoop up the lion’s share of awards and honours each year all over the world, we published here two years ago a review of the previous year’s award-winners. By analysing the prizewinners listed over the year in our “Awards” section, we were able to quantify this subjective impression using objective figures. We will now attempt to repeat the same procedure in a review of short film awards in 2009. more
In our Topic article in September 2009 on the European MEDIA funding programme, we also mentioned support for film festivals. We referred there to MEDIA regulations that favour European films – rules by which, for example, festivals with an international orientation are only eligible for a grant if they devote less than 30% of their programming to films from outside Europe.
An attentive reader has now alerted us to recent changes in the funding guidelines that may in particular put short film festivals at a disadvantage. more
British academic publisher Intellect (Bristol, UK) is currently at work on a new journal dedicated to short film. “Short Film Studies” aims to promote better understanding of the short form by analysing individual films from a variety of perspectives. In every issue, two to three short films will be examined in detail in several expert articles. The journal will also feature interviews with the films’ directors, illustrations of each shot and a link allowing readers to watch the film on the Internet. more
